Week 8
Monday
Today we start by looking at masks from several different cultures around the world. Masks not only conceal identity, but also impart a new one to the viewer. They have been used for ceremonial purposes, religious purposes, as well as recreational purposes.
You will be designing a mask of your own, by shaping the structures of a face out of paper mache. Today we will begin by sketching out different ideas, and thinking about them in three dimensional space.

Tuesday
Demo: Armature
Today you will begin to construct the support structure which will hold up the features of your mask. Since all of your features will be three dimensional and not flat, this armature needs to be very strong to support weight.

Thursday
Armature continued...
By this point, you should have one or two noodles. Today, make at least a dozen, and begin building the support structure that covers the face. Include a way of attaching it to your head.
Your goal is to have most of your armature built by the end of the day.

Friday
Paper mache demo
So begins a very messy business. We will be using a flour and water paste to create a skin over the surface of your armature. This skin will harden when it has dried. We will wait for the first layer to dry, before adding a second layer next week.
